Kayakjuaq (Joe Curley)

Kayakjuaq, also known as Joe Curley, was born in the late 1800s at Maliksiaq (not far from Lyon Inlet) and grew up at Repulse Bay/Naujaat. Whalers called him Joe Curley for his curly hair. He was Angutimmarik's brother's biological son, but his uncle adopted him at a young age. As Angutimmarik's adopted son, he grew up among the whalers and knew the main figures of the era such as John and Alexander Murray, George Comer and several others. During the last hunts, Kayakjuaq was about 14 or 15 (Eber 1989: 107).
