The whaling ship A.T. Gifford, a schooner, was built in Essex, Massachusetts in 1883. Between 1884 and 1900, the A.T. Gifford was owned by George Dennis, but it was bought back by the New York furrier F.N. Monjo. When Mr. Dennis owned it, Edward M. Joyce was the captain. After the wreck of the Era in 1906, George Comer took command of the Gifford, spending two consecutive winters on board in Cape Fullerton between 1910 and 1912.

Captain James Allen Wing succeeded Captain Comer. The Gifford's last captain was Arthur O. Gibbons. Under his command, in 1915 the ship caught fire during its last voyage to Hudson Bay to collect furs and products from the whale hunt at Cape Fullerton station. At that time, the Gifford was owned by F.N. Monjo of New York, and the Fullerton trading station was managed by Captain George Cleveland.
